A large Yuan dynasty blue-and-white porcelain charger, mid-14th century (c. 1320–1350), Jingdezhen. The central medallion depicts two fenghuang (Chinese phoenixes) in opposed flight — one ascending, one descending — generating a dynamic circular composition. Dense undulating lotus and peony scroll fills the background in the horror vacui manner. The flat rim bears a strict diamond-diaper geometric border. Made using Persian cobalt imported via Mongol trade networks, this dish was produced primarily for the Islamic luxury export market.
