The triple portal serves as the grand ceremonial entrance to the cathedral, functioning as a didactic Bible in stone. Master sculptors employed significant undercutting — particularly in the architectural canopies above the saints and intricate foliage motifs — to create shadow traps. These dark, deep recesses provide powerful visual contrast to the rounded forms of the statues, giving the figures a sense of weight, presence, and rhythmic life within the stone architecture.
