West Choir Foliate Capital at Naumburg Cathedral

3152

Creation Date: Carved and installed around 1240–1260 CE (during the master building campaigns of the anonymous genius known to art history as the Naumburg Master / Naumburger Meister). Period: The High Gothic Period in Germany (specifically the transition from German Late Romanesque to mature Gothic naturalism), an epoch celebrated for unprecedented anatomical and botanical realism in monumental stone sculpture.

Structural Load Transfer: Functioned as a structural capital designed to gather and transmit the downward and lateral thrust from the upper vault ribs into the vertical wall supports of the western choir. Theological and Botanical Naturalism: Served a profound theological purpose by replacing abstract or stylized Romanesque acanthus with living, native flora (Kreuzblume and naturalistic woodland plants), symbolizing God's creation, the beauty of Eden, and the blossoming of divine grace on earth.
