The Warrior and Foliate Canopy Wood Carving at Winchester Cathedral

2151

High Medieval / English Decorated Gothic Period (c. 1308, early 14th century)

An intricate English heartwood oak carving from Winchester Cathedral's choir stalls depicting a male warrior clutching a raised sword and round shield, his hair issuing in continuous vine sprays that fill the surrounding canopy. Carved around 1308 by William Lingwode, this figure combines the leaf-generating capacity of the Green Man type with full human agency — the warrior is both generating and inhabiting the vegetal world, the two capacities coexisting without resolving.
