Greece (Santorini, Akrotiri)
Wall Painting Fragment from the House of the Ladies, Akrotiri. Santorini, Greece
3083
Date Created: Circa 1700–1600 BCE (Late Bronze Age / Late Cycladic I period). Period: The Early Neopalatial / Late Cycladic Period of the Aegean civilization. This era represents the peak of Theran maritime prosperity, high artistic sophistication, and close cultural interchange with Minoan Crete.
Elite Residential and Ritual Space Decoration: Functionally, the fresco decorated the upper interior walls of a multi-story elite building (the House of the Ladies), transforming domestic or sacred chambers into immersive environments that reflected high social status and ritual piety. Cosmological and Ceremonial Symbolism: The pairing of female worshippers with sacred papyrus plants and celestial-patterned awnings symbolized the union of nature, fertility, and divine protection under the auspices of Aegean nature goddesses.
