Germany (Aachen)
Vine Scroll Mosaic with Gold Foliage, Aachen Cathedral, Germany
999
Late 19th century (c. 1879–1881 AD), Neo-Byzantine restoration; original cathedral c. 800 AD
Winding stylized vine scrolls form a complex organic lattice against a deep blue background. The contrast between deep blue ground and brilliant gold tesserae generates visual depth, with the specific orientation of tesserae and interplay of light on the golden leaves giving the motif a tactile three-dimensional quality as if the foliage is raised from the background surface.
