Vaulted Ceiling Grotesque Ornament of the Piccolomini Library (Siena Cathedral)
2254
Created during the High Renaissance period, specifically painted between 1502 and 1508.
This object is a fresco painting fragment executed directly on the vaulted plaster surface. The technique utilizes the buon fresco method combined with rich dry-pigment and gold-leaf applications on fine lime plaster, mastered by Bernardino di Betto, known as Pinturicchio, and his workshop assistants (which historically included the young Raphael).
