Vault Mural Detail with Shield-Bearing Hybrid Figure and Foliate Scrollwork in the Cloister of Schleswig Cathedral
2480
Created in the 14th century (circa 1300–1320 CE), corresponding to the High to Late Gothic period of construction and interior decoration.
This image captures an architectural vaulting fragment featuring a polychrome ceiling painting composed of a hybrid figure (human upper body with bird/beast lower extremities) holding a shield or heraldic panel, set against sprawling foliate vine scrolls and multi-lobed leaves. It is crafted from lime plaster applied directly over medieval brick and stone rib vaulting, painted using natural earth and mineral pigments (ochres, carbon blacks, and lime-resistant mineral colors) executed in traditional fresco-secco wall-painting techniques.
