Vault Mural Detail with Janus/Multi-Headed Grotesques and Foliate Scrollwork in the Cloister of Schleswig Cathedral

2478

Created in the 14th century (circa 1300–1320 CE), corresponding to the High to Late Gothic period of construction and decoration.

This image captures an architectural vaulting fragment featuring a polychrome ceiling painting composed of complex grotesque iconography—specifically a multi-faced or Janus-like central figure wearing a hat with a plume/crest, flanked by flowing scrolling vegetation, multi-lobed leaves, and bearded mask-like terminals with bird-foot features. It is crafted from lime plaster applied directly over medieval brick and stone rib vaulting, painted using natural earth and mineral pigments (ochres, carbon blacks, and lime-resistant mineral colors) executed in traditional fresco-secco wall-painting techniques.
