Vault Mural Detail with Intertwined Amphisbaena/Dragons and Foliate Scrollwork in the Cloister of Schleswig Cathedral

2479

Created in the 14th century (circa 1300–1320 CE), corresponding to the High to Late Gothic period of construction and decoration.

This image captures an architectural vaulting fragment featuring a polychrome ceiling painting composed of symmetrical, intertwined dragon or serpent-like hybrid creatures (such as double-headed or amphisbaena-like motifs) paired with branching tree-of-life or multi-lobed foliate scrollwork. It is crafted from lime plaster applied directly over medieval brick and stone rib vaulting, painted using natural earth and mineral pigments (ochres, carbon blacks, and lime-resistant mineral colors) executed in traditional fresco-secco wall-painting techniques.
