Vault Mural Detail with Hybrid Figures and Foliate Ornaments in the Cloister of Schleswig Cathedral

2473

Created approximately 14th century (circa 1300–1320 CE), with construction and painting traditions spanning the High to Late Gothic transition.

This image captures an interior architectural vaulting web (valvkappa) decorated with colorful polychrome murals featuring hybrid creatures (such as centaur-like or winged hybrid archers), floral motifs, and sprawling vine scrolls. It is crafted from lime plaster applied directly over medieval brick and stone rib vaulting, painted using natural earth and mineral pigments (ochres, carbon blacks, and lime-resistant mineral colors) executed in traditional fresco-secco wall-painting techniques.
