Vault Mural Detail with Avian-Hybrid Warriors, Musicians, and Floral Fields in the Cloister of Schleswig Cathedral

2482

Created in the 14th century (circa 1300–1320 CE), corresponding to the High to Late Gothic period of construction and interior decoration.

This image captures an architectural vaulting fragment featuring a polychrome ceiling painting composed of avian-hybrid creatures—one wielding a raised club or weapon, and another playing a wind instrument—interspersed with fields of floating multi-petaled blossoms and winding floral tendrils. It is crafted from lime plaster applied directly over medieval brick and stone rib vaulting, painted using natural earth and mineral pigments (ochres, carbon blacks, and lime-resistant mineral colors) executed in traditional fresco-secco wall-painting techniques.
