Vault Frescoes and Grotesque Ribs of the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista (Parma)
2395
Painted between 1520 and 1523, belonging to the High Renaissance to Mannerism transition period.
This image depicts a section of the vaulted ceiling ribs adorned with elaborate Renaissance ornamental painting. The technique is true fresco (buon fresco) combined with decorative grisaille shading and subtle gilding on plaster, creating a simulated low-relief effect along the structural diagonal ribs of the cross-vaulting.
