Vault Frescoes and Grotesque Ornamentation of the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista (Parma)
2396
Painted between 1520 and 1523, belonging to the High Renaissance to Mannerism transition period.
This image depicts a wide-angle view of multiple interconnected cross-vaulted bays in the church nave, covered in extensive decorative fresco painting. The technique used is true fresco (buon fresco) on plaster, incorporating fine grisaille monochrome shading, subtle terra-cotta tones, and gold highlights to simulate three-dimensional architectural moldings, carved reliefs, and rich tapestry-like bands across the structural curves.
