The Tympanum and Relief Canopy of the Colegio de San Gregorio
2039
Late Gothic / Isabelline, 1488–1496 CE
The tympanum and canopy above the main entrance portal of the Colegio de San Gregorio in Valladolid, executed 1488–1496 in the Isabelline Late Gothic style. The lower tympanum depicts Saint Gregory the Great seated centrally in papal vestments, flanked by kneeling and seated clerics and scholars in sharp high relief against a meticulous fleur-de-lis diaper-patterned backing. Above the lintel, a central heraldic shield bearing the fleur-de-lis emblem of the founder Alonso de Burgos is held by two flanking angels with intricately carved drapery and wings. The overarching canopy above dissolves into a dense, perforated web of naturalistic branches, twisted twigs, and foliate scrolls executed in extreme openwork stone tracery. Deep undercutting throughout creates stark shadow pockets giving the composition an illusion of weightless textile and organic growth.
