Tribute Bearers and Chariot Procession (Apadana East Stairs, Persepolis)

2381

Late 6th to early 5th century BC (approx. 515–490 BC), during the Achaemenid Period under the reigns of Kings Darius I the Great and Xerxes I.

The presented fragment is a masterfully executed low relief (bas-relief) carved into a mass of dark grey, dense limestone (local marmoreal limestone with a polished appearance). The fragment depicts a delegation (traditionally identified as Lydian or subject tribute bearers) leading a small ceremonial horse-drawn chariot and bringing tribute — metal vessels, bowls, and bracelets. The figures are rendered in profile, while the eyes and part of the torso are shown frontally, displaying the influence of ancient Near Eastern artistic conventions.
