Polychromatic Trencadís Mosaic Pinnacle Fragment of the Nativity Façade at the Basílica de la Sagrada Família
2047
Catalan Modernisme / Contemporary Monumental, designed c. 1892–1926, executed through 20th–21st c.
An architectural pinnacle terminal from the bell towers of the Nativity Façade at the Basílica de la Sagrada Família, designed by Antoni Gaudí and executed through the mid-to-late twentieth and twenty-first centuries following his original design models. The pinnacle transitions from a faceted, tapering vertical shaft clad in warm-toned ceramic shards into a wide disc-like medallion framing a bold central sacred monogram. The outer perimeter of the crown is ringed by a regular sequence of spherical white globe nodes that mimic clustered fruit or celestial bodies, set against a vibrant red and gold mosaic backdrop of gilded Venetian glass tesserae and multicolored ceramic fragments. The projecting planes of the central monogram and the spherical globe halos create high relief depth and striking chiaroscuro, giving the static tower crown a radiant, living presence against the open sky.
