Trencadís Floral Mosaic Fragment of Casa Milà (La Pedrera) by Antoni Gaudí

2097

High Catalan Modernisme, 1906–1912

A trencadís mosaic panel embedded in the exterior façade of Casa Milà (La Pedrera) in Barcelona, designed by Antoni Gaudí and constructed 1906–1912. The panel depicts a botanical composition — an upright flowering plant with a dark vertical stem, pale green branches, clustered white blossoms at the base, and purple-tinted flower heads at the crown — assembled from irregular hand-set ceramic shards bonded in a mortar bed, against a field of pink and white mosaic shards. The panel is set beneath deeply carved volumetric stone capitals and floral reliefs that project outward from the building, creating a deliberate contrast between the massive three-dimensional stonework and the intimate flat plane of the mosaic. Individual ceramic fragments, hand-set at slightly varying angles, catch daylight differentially, introducing a shimmering pixelated quality to the botanical forms and animating the façade surface with microscopic chiaroscuro across each shard edge.
