Trencadís Mosaic Cross and Star Pinnacle Fragment of the Nativity Façade at the Basílica de la Sagrada Família

2058

Late Catalan Modernisme, c. 1894–1930

A pinnacle fragment from the Nativity Façade of the Basílica de la Sagrada Família, designed by Antoni Gaudí and executed c. 1894–1930. The fragment presents a multi-pointed stellar relief module integrated with a cruciform mosaic emblem: faceted pyramidal star faces project dramatically from a rough-hewn Montjuïc stone pier, their points radiating outward in multiple directions. The trencadís mosaic surface transitions in color from a brilliant white central apex through fiery orange to deep crimson and dark red ceramic shards at the outer edges. Extreme undercutting between the stone pier and the projecting star points creates deep shadow pockets that produce a dramatic chiaroscuro effect against the rusticated stone. The form reads simultaneously as a stellar body and a cruciform architectural terminal.
