Polychromatic Trencadís Chimney Cluster of the Rooftop Terrace at Casa Batlló
2056
Catalan Modernisme (Art Nouveau), 1904–1906
A chimney cluster from the rooftop terrace of Casa Batlló, designed by Antoni Gaudí and completed 1904–1906. Four distinct vertical flues are merged into a single unified sculptural mass, with each flue terminating in an individual conical tip capped with a spherical glass ball mosaic finial. The joints and transitions between flues are smoothed by the trencadís surface treatment — a continuous mosaic skin of ceramic fragments in soft pinks, pale blues, earthy creams, and whites. A horizontal ceramic band runs around the lower portion of the cluster, bearing alternating yellow and green floral petal motifs that link the four shafts into a single designed object. The spherical finials and soft pastel palette connect the chimney cluster visually to the aquatic and marine themes of the building's overall rooftop treatment.
