The Zoological Panel and Polychrome Talavera Detailing of San Francisco Acatepec
2916
Date: The monumental facade and its extensive ceramic tile cladding were executed primarily between 1750 and 1760 CE, during the zenith of the New Spanish Baroque period. Period: New Spanish Baroque / Mexican Churrigueresque / Talavera Architectural Tradition (18th century).
Architectural Role: Functions as an exuberant external decorative skin (horror vacui) that transforms a structural masonry facade into a vibrant, reflective polychrome altarpiece, effectively dissolving flat architectural planes through color, light, and repeating geometry. Symbolic, Cultural, and Religious Purpose: Conceived as a visual manifestation of the Heavenly Jerusalem on earth. The dazzling interplay of sunlight on glazed ceramic surfaces created a theatrical, transcendent experience for worshippers, while celebrating regional Poblano craft traditions and blending European Christian iconography with local flora and fauna symbolism.
