The Temple of Edfu (The Pronaos and Hypostyle Hall)

Egypt (Edfu)

The Temple of Edfu (The Pronaos and Hypostyle Hall)

2438

Construction began on August 23, 237 BCE (under Ptolemy III Euergetes I) and was completed in 57 BCE (under Ptolemy XII Auletes). Period: Ptolemaic Period (Hellenistic Egypt, spanning 305–30 BCE).

This object represents a monumental architectural fragment of the temple's facade, hypostyle hall (pronaos), and composite floral column capitals half-buried in desert sand (as famously documented in 19th-century explorations). It is carved from local Egyptian sandstone, utilizing precision stone-masonry, low-relief sculpture, sunken relief (cavo-rilievo), and fine chisel work.
