The Mystic Mill (Ordeal of the Israelites / Quern of Moses) Historiated Capital by Gislebertus from the Cathedral of Saint-Lazare
2185
1120–1135 CE; High Romanesque (12th Century)
A historiated capital depicting the complex typological allegory of the Mystic Mill (Quern of Moses): a figure operates a mill structure featuring an architectural housing with carved human profiles, while another pours grain into the mechanism. Large fan-shaped leaves with serrated edges and central floral stalks frame the upper corners. Profound undercutting behind the figures and the projecting mill structure creates intense theatrical chiaroscuro.
