Spain (Comillas, Cantabria)
The Minaret-Style Tower and Sunflower Frieze of El Capricho (Early Gaudí / Orientalist Phase)
2633
Built during Antoni Gaudí’s early career between 1883 and 1885 (contemporaneous with the late 19th-century Historicist and Orientalist movements in Spanish architecture).
Architecturally, it serves as a decorative viewing tower and functional ventilation shaft inspired by Islamic minarets, designed to provide a vertical visual counterweight to the low-slung villa and serve as a playful "caprice" for its wealthy patron.
