Italy (Florence)
The Middle Storeys and Upper Shaft of Giotto's Campanile (Italian Gothic / Trecento Architecture)
2637
Built during the Italian Gothic period, specifically constructed between 1351 and 1359 by the Tuscan architect and sculptor Francesco Talenti, who succeeded Andrea Pisano as director of works and completed the middle and upper tiers of the bell tower.
Architecturally, it serves as the vertical belfry and upper architectural shaft of the freestanding campanile, designed to house church bells, project civic verticality, and provide a harmonious, light-filled transition between Giotto's solid lower base and the heavy crowning cornice.
