The Imperial Splendor of the Trajaneum: Architectural Frieze and Molding from Pergamon (115–130 CE)

2584

Created during the High Imperial Roman period under Emperor Trajan and Hadrian, specifically between 115 and 130 CE (coinciding with the construction and dedication of the sanctuary of the Trajaneum at Pergamon).

Architecturally, it functioned as part of the monumental entablature and portico cornice of the Trajaneum, designed to frame the sacred temple precinct honoring the deified Emperor Trajan and Jupiter. Symbolically, it projected Roman imperial majesty, divine right, and the absolute cultural and political hegemony of the empire over Hellenistic lands.
