The Gallery of Kings and Architectural Sculpture of Notre-Dame de Paris
2920
Date: The original sculptures and architectural frames of the Gallery of Kings were executed primarily between 1220 and 1240 CE, during the High Gothic period. (Note: A significant portion of the statues seen today consists of 19th-century neo-Gothic restorations and replacements carved under the direction of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc). Period: High Gothic architectural sculpture (13th century).
Architectural Role: Functions as a continuous horizontal frieze that organizes the west facade, establishing a sophisticated proportional bridge between the lower entry portals and the upper rose window zone, while integrating sculpture directly into structural support members. Symbolic, Cultural, and Religious Purpose: Conceived to visually articulate the genealogical lineage of Christ through the Old Testament kings, while simultaneously asserting the divine right, legitimacy, and temporal continuity of the French Capetian monarchy.
