The Flamboyant Gothic Rose: West Facade Rose Window of Strasbourg Cathedral (13th–14th Century)
2606
Created during the High to Late Gothic period, specifically designed and executed c. 1277–1284 (the west facade and its monumental rose window were initiated by master mason Erwin von Steinbach).
Architecturally, it serves as the grand west-front rose window designed to flood the cathedral's nave with a mystical spectrum of colored light (Lux Nova), while visually symbolizing the Virgin Mary (as the mystic rose) and the wheel of divine creation.
