The Façade of the Certosa di Pavia (Lombard Renaissance Masterpiece)
2640
The construction of the complex began on August 27, 1396, but the monumental marble façade was executed primarily during the Late Quattrocento and High Renaissance period, spanning from 1473 to 1507, under the direction of master architects and sculptors such as Guiniforte Solari, Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, and Benedetto Briosco.
Architecturally, it serves as the lavish, triumphant exterior screen and western entrance of the monastic church, designed to function simultaneously as an opulent dynastic mausoleum showcase for the Visconti family, an expression of ducal piety, and a supreme visual manifesto of Lombard Renaissance art.
