The Crucifixion within a Decorated Arch (Trecento / School of Giotto)
2417
Created during the Trecento (14th century) period, specifically dating to circa 1330–1340 (Late Giottesque / Early Italian Gothic period).
This object is a monumental fresco painting executed using the buon fresco technique (with dry-fresco/secco touch-ups) on prepared lime-plaster wall surfaces, framed within a Gothic pointed structural arch. It depicts the dramatic biblical scene of the Crucifixion of Christ, featuring Christ on the Cross centrally elevated on Golgotha, surrounded by weeping angels in the upper sky, the fainting Virgin Mary supported by the holy women and St. John the Evangelist on the left, and Roman soldiers, horsemen, and civic onlookers on the right.
