The Churrigueresque Main Portal: Palacio de San Telmo, Seville (18th Century)
2623
Built during the Spanish Late Baroque (Barroco Tardío) and Ultra-Baroque/Churrigueresque period, initiated under architect Leonardo de Figueroa starting in 1682, with this grand main portal systematically executed and completed between 1724 and 1754 by his son Matías and grandson Antonio Matías de Figueroa.
Architecturally, it serves as an elaborate ceremonial entrance and symbolic altarpiece-facade designed to convey maritime power, state authority, and religious devotion while acting as the visual centerpiece of the former Universidad de Mareantes (University for Navigators).
