The Christian and the Lion / Daniel in the Lions' Den Historiated Capital by Gislebertus from the Cathedral of Saint-Lazare

2187

1120–1135 CE; High Romanesque (12th Century)

A historiated capital wrapping organically around its basket: a seated human figure in tunic and cap calmly reaches toward a fierce open-mouthed beast whose leonine body arches dynamically against the corner of the capital. Lush foliage frames the background while meticulously carved locks form a textured mane and a scaly tail winds down the corner. Deep undercutting behind the animal's open jaws and body creates intense chiaroscuro contrasts between vivid highlights and cavernous shadows.
