The Chemical Building in St. Louis
2652
Built in 1896 (with an annex added in 1903 by the St. Louis firm Mauran, Russell, and Garden), representing late 19th-century commercial high-rise architecture.
Architecturally, it serves as a decorative horizontal belt course and frieze, breaking up the 17-story masonry and steel facade of the Chicago-style office building while providing durable, weather-resistant ornament.
