The Annunciation Historiated Capital by Gislebertus in the Cathedral of Saint-Lazare

2182

1120–1135 CE; High Romanesque (12th Century)

A historiated capital wrapping a continuous narrative frieze in arched bays: the Archangel Gabriel steps forward dynamically to address the seated or shrinking figure of the Virgin Mary beneath a carved arcade. Spiraling colonnettes with diamond-pattern shafts frame the scene; deep undercutting behind the figures' limbs and angel's wings creates striking chiaroscuro contrasts between vivid highlights on raised drapery ridges and cavernous shadows behind the arches.
