The Annunciation Historiated Capital by Gislebertus in the Cathedral of Saint-Lazare

2181

1120–1135 CE; High Romanesque (12th Century)

A historiated capital wrapping a continuous narrative frieze in arched bays: the Virgin Mary leans backward in an expressive, hesitant gesture beneath a carved arcade while the dynamic Archangel Gabriel steps forward. Elongated proportions, restless linear drapery with rhythmic parallel folds, and deep undercutting create powerful chiaroscuro contrasts between crisp highlights on raised stone ridges and cavernous shadows behind the arches.
