Templerhaus (Hildesheim): Renaissance Oriel Window with Sculptural Relief Friezes and Herm Pilasters
2531
The richly carved Renaissance oriel window was added to the older structure in 1591 during the Northern Renaissance / Late Mannerist period.
Architecturally, the oriel window projects outward from the upper storeys to maximize interior natural light, expand spatial capacity, and serve as an elite display of civic and patrician status on the public market square. Symbolically, the elaborate programmatic display of human figures, allegorical herms, and narrative reliefs communicated the owner's wealth, humanist education, and moral standing.
