Templerhaus (Hildesheim): Oriel Window Upper Tier Detail with Caryatids and Herm Pilasters
2536
Created in 1591 during the Northern Renaissance / Late Mannerist period.
Architecturally, these sculptural supports serve the structural function of vertical mullions dividing the window bays while visually carrying the heavy load of the upper cornice. Symbolically, the deployment of classical caryatids and herms demonstrated the patron's immersion in Renaissance humanist culture, projecting learning, prestige, and aesthetic refinement outward onto the civic marketplace.
