Templerhaus (Hildesheim): Oriel Window Detail with Herm Pilasters, Egg-and-Dart Moldings, and Narrative Frieze
2532
Created in 1591 during the Northern Renaissance / Late Mannerist period.
Architecturally, these structural elements articulate the vertical window mullions and horizontal spandrels of the projecting bay window, distributing load while creating a rich visual rhythm. Symbolically, the combination of classical architectural orders, grotesque masks (serving an apotropaic function to ward off evil), herms, and moralizing narrative reliefs demonstrated the owner's sophisticated humanist education, civic status, and wealth to the public realm.
