Temple of Apollo Sosianus in Rome

3038

Date Created: c. 34–32 BC (reconstructed under the consul Gaius Sosius during the late Roman Republic and early Augustan transitional era). Period: The Late Roman Republic / Early Augustan Period, an epoch characterized by a profound stylistic synthesis of classical Greek idealism and emerging Augustan imperial state art.

Architectural Entablature: Functionally engineered to sit above the order's colonnade, supporting the upper roof structure while providing a seamless aesthetic transition from vertical columns to horizontal framing. Sacred Ritual Symbolism and Political Propaganda: Beyond architectural support, the imagery of sacrificial offerings and victor's garlands served a dual religious and political purpose: honoring Apollo as healer and protector while aggrandizing the military triumphs and piety of the Roman general Gaius Sosius.
