Architectural Stone Relief and Pediment Detail of the Passion Façade at the Basílica de la Sagrada Família

2049

Catalan Modernisme / 20th-Century Ecclesiastical, designed 1911, constructed c. 1954–1976

The monumental triangular pediment and stepped arcade bridge structure of the Passion Façade of the Basílica de la Sagrada Família, designed by Gaudí in 1911 and executed primarily c. 1954–1976. In stark contrast to the joyous organic curves of the Nativity Façade, the Passion side employs straight lines, stark geometric planes, skeletal bone-like columns, and sharp angular ribbing to evoke grief, sacrifice, and severe emotional gravity. The triangular pediment features a stepped open-arcade ramp system adorned with carved rosettes and prominent Latin text running along the sloping upper margins. Deeply incised monumental lettering and sculptural figural groups populate the pediment. Structural undercutting, open arcades, and sharp angles cast hard, dramatic shadows across the stone surfaces, emphasizing weight, structural tension, and a somber aesthetic.
