St. Michael's Church (Hildesheim): The Angel Choir Screen Arcade with Figural Capitals and Spandrel Vine Scrolls
2559
Constructed between 1010 and 1033 (consecrated in 1031) during the height of the Ottonian Romanesque architectural epoch under the patronage of Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim.
Structurally and liturgically, this chancel or gallery screen delineated the sacred boundaries of the western choir space, separating the clergy and altar from the wider congregational area. Symbolically, the combination of guardian angels, ascending vine scrolls, and paired creatures transforms the physical barrier into a vision of the Heavenly Jerusalem and Paradise.
