Spiral Cosmatesque Columns of the Cloister of Saint John Lateran

2451

Created approximately between 1215 and 1232 CE. Period: High Middle Ages / Cosmatesque Romanesque Period (13th Century).

This image captures an architectural fragment of paired twisted (salomonic) colonnettes featuring embedded multi-colored geometric mosaic inlay bands (Cosmatesque work). It is crafted from white marble shafts inlaid with hand-cut glass paste, red porphyry, green serpentine, and gold leaf mosaic tesserae, executed through the specialized medieval Cosmati technique of channel-cutting, stone-inlay (opus sectile), turning, and carved composite capitals.
