Spiral and Rosette Fresco Frieze from Tiryns
3086
Date Created: Circa 13th century BCE (Late Helladic IIIB). Period: The Late Mycenaean (Palatial) Period. This era represents the height of Mycenaean citadel architecture, monumental palatial ornamentation, and sophisticated geometric frieze design on the Greek mainland.
Palatial Architectural Framing: Functionally, this ornamental frieze served to demarcate architectural zones—framing doorways, thresholds, or the upper registers of throne rooms and megaron walls—thereby establishing visual rhythm, order, and spatial hierarchy within elite Mycenaean citadels. Cosmological and Apotropaic Symbolism: In Late Bronze Age Aegean iconography, the continuous running spiral symbolized eternal cyclical renewal, infinite cosmic energy, and flowing water currents, while the rosettes represented solar radiance, divine order, and blooming nature.
