Sculptural Musical Frieze with Angelic Herald Groups of the Nativity Façade at the Basílica de la Sagrada Família

2051

Catalan Modernisme, designed and executed under Gaudí's direct supervision, c. 1894–1926

A horizontal sculptural frieze from the Nativity Façade of the Basílica de la Sagrada Família, designed and executed under Antoni Gaudí's direct supervision. Life-sized stone figures hold violins and lutes while adoring angels press close in devotional postures, all set against an organically craggy stone background of dense floral motifs, swirling foliage, and carved rosettes. The degree of undercutting is extreme: individual figures are nearly fully detached from the stone behind them, their forms projecting dramatically and casting deep shadows that animate the frieze. The warm ochre Montjuïc sandstone alternates with the deep shadow of the undercutting, creating a relief depth that reads as a continuous field of acoustic and devotional activity frozen at the moment of its greatest intensity.
