Sculptural Figural Group and Cypress-Tree Column of the Nativity Façade at the Basílica de la Sagrada Família
2050
Catalan Modernisme, designed and executed under Gaudí's direct supervision, c. 1894–1926
A central portal section of the Nativity Façade at the Basílica de la Sagrada Família, designed and executed under Antoni Gaudí's direct supervision between approximately 1894 and 1926. At the center of the composition rises a column in the form of a cypress tree — a structural element that is simultaneously a natural form, with the tree's trunk forming the shaft and its foliage integrating into the surrounding stone carving. A star motif is carved at the column's base. Life-sized sculptural groups surround the portal: kneeling adult figures in devotional postures, clusters of cherubic children, and richly carved backgrounds of dense foliage, rosettes, and circular medallions. Openwork stone tracery frames circular stained-glass windows, and the composition is executed in warm ochre Montjuïc sandstone native to the Barcelona region. The degree of undercutting is extraordinary — every surface has been treated as a field for carving.
