The Sculpted Relief and Entablature of the Jesuit Church Interior

2033

Counter-Reformation Baroque, 1568–1584 CE (interior programs extended 17th–18th c.)

A monumental interior architectural entablature and sculpted relief assembly from the Church of the Gesù in Rome. The triangular tympanum is densely populated with winged cherubim heads emerging from stylized clouds, centered on a descending dove of the Holy Spirit amid radiating rays of divine light. Below, a continuous foliate frieze of rinceaux and acanthus incorporates a central putto holding a cross. Horizontal bands carry precise egg-and-dart, dentil, and bead-and-reel moldings. A broken scroll pediment crowns the assembly, its disrupted triangle opening toward the heavenly iconography above. Deep undercutting behind the cherub wings, cloud banks, and vine loops generates high-contrast chiaroscuro under interior church lighting.
