Rosslyn Chapel (Roslin, Scotland): The Apprentice Pillar (The Prentice Pillar)

2554

Founded in 1446 by Sir William Sinclair, with the construction of the ornate interior and legendary master-carvings executed primarily between 1484 and 1489, during the late Scottish Gothic (Flamboyant Gothic / Decorated Gothic) period.

Structurally, the pillar serves as a primary support pier holding up the vaulting of the eastern choir and Lady Chapel. Symbolically, its intricate organic spirals and mythical carvings embody complex medieval theological allegories, blending Christian motifs, stonemason folklore, and esoteric symbolism.
