Rosslyn Chapel (Roslin, Scotland): Lady Chapel Vaulting and Interior Architecture Detail

2555

Founded in 1446 by Sir William Sinclair, with the construction of the highly ornate interior vaulting, piers, and stone carvings executed primarily between 1484 and 1489, during the late Scottish Gothic (Flamboyant Gothic / Decorated Gothic) period.

Architecturally, this vaulted bay system supports the roof of the chapel's most sacred eastern sanctuary while distributing weight across clustered piers. Symbolically, the exuberant stone-carving creates an architectural metaphor for the heavenly Jerusalem and the Garden of Eden, embedding complex theological, botanical, and esoteric narratives into the sacred space.
