The Romanesque Mask Capital with Interlaced Foliage and Braided Beard
2147
High Romanesque Period (c. 1120–1150)
A structural Romanesque limestone column capital organized around a dominant symmetrical human face whose stylized mustache melts directly into complex multi-strand braided ribbons representing hair and beard, flanked by dense panels of geometric interlace and circular knotwork wrapping continuously around the bell. Unlike the foliage-generating Green Man type, the face here produces not nature but pure geometric pattern — the human figure consumed by form rather than overwhelmed by plant life.
