The Romanesque Foliate Mask and Interlace Capitals from the Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine (Vézelay)
2142
High Romanesque Period (1140s)
A pair of fine-grained Burgundian limestone narthex capitals from the 1140s Vézelay campaign: one with a central human mask whose facial features dissolve into curling plant tendrils, the other a tight geometric network of heart-shaped and palmette leaves tied by horizontal collars. Carved at the zenith of Burgundian Romanesque art under Cluniac influence, the capitals employ sharply faceted high-relief and aggressive undercutting to amplify shadow contrasts for pilgrims entering the sanctuary.
